Date: 2024-10-27

THIS IS the moment Labour MP Mike Amesbury sucker punched a constituent in the street.

Shocking CCTV footage also shows the 55-year-old politician continuing to try hit the man up to six times while he lays on the ground.

However, it’s unclear how many strikes connect.

Yesterday, Mr Amesbury claimed he was threatened before the attack at 2.15am on Saturday in his constituency of Runcorn and Helsby, Cheshire.

Mobile phone video showed him shouting “you’ll never threaten me again” as the man lay on the ground.

But new footage, obtained by the MailOnline, shows the MP seemingly throwing the first punch.

He appears in animated fashion before letting loose the left hook to the man’s head.

The CCTV video also shows the MP – a former member of Sir Keir Starmer’s Shadow Cabinet – being held back by other bystanders.

Last year, a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking and harassing Mr Amesbury in his constituency office in a shopping centre in Frodsham in 2022.

Warrington magistrates’ court was told that Stephen Cowell had stared through the office glass, asked guards about the level of security guards and cameras present and followed him to his car, reports The Times.

‘I FELT THREATENED’

Mr Amesbury said prior to the release of the CCTV today: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends.

“This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident.

“I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

The Labour Party said: “We are aware of an incident that took place last night.

“We understand that Mike Amesbury MP approached Cheshire Police to report what happened this morning himself and that he will cooperate with any inquiries they have.”

Cops have confirmed they are now probing the incident.

Cheshire Constabulary said: “At 2.48am on Saturday 26 October, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham.

“A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing.”
