Budapest – Ten days before an EU summit in Budapest, the Hungarian government launched a new national consultation on Monday against the “trade war” allegedly initiated by Brussels towards China and Russia.
Nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban criticizes sanctions against Russia and opposes taxes on Chinese electric cars.
“The national consultation will strengthen the government,” Mr. Orban recently explained, in the face of “Brussels’ demands” that lead Europe to “ruin in terms of competitiveness.”
Should the Hungarians “participate in the trade war launched by Brussels, at the risk of endangering their economy” or should they “opt for neutrality?” asks one of the questions. Should they “encourage migration” or promote birth rates?
Hungary holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council until the end of December and will host its leaders on November 8 in Budapest. (October 28, 2024)
