Netflix's new drama is being called the Australian 'Yellowstone.' Fans are already clamoring for a season 2.
Date: 2024-10-29
"Territory" is a new Netflix drama series about the fight for a cattle station in Australia.
The show has drawn comparisons to "Yellowstone" and "Succession."
Here's everything we know about a potential season 2.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the season one finale of "Territory."
Netflix's answer to "Yellowstone" has arrived in the form of a new drama series with sweeping views of Australia and a family's fight to preserve their legacy.
Timothy Lee and Ben Davie's "Territory" centers on Marianne Station, the world's largest (fictional) cattle station.
After Daniel Lawson (Jake Ryan), the heir apparent, is killed, a fight for the station kicks into high gear as the Lawsons try to keep their land from getting into the hands of business rivals, gangsters, and the territory's Indigenous people.
The premise of "Territory" has inevitably drawn comparisons to "Yellowstone," Paramount Network's hit Western drama starring Kevin Costner. Although "Territory" has only been on Netflix since Thursday, the streamer might have a hit on its hands. At the time of this article's publication, the neo-Western drama occupies the No. 3 spot on Netflix's list of the top 10 TV shows in the US.
Here's everything that we know about a potential second season of "Territory."
Season 2 of 'Territory' isn't official yet, but it's a strong possibility
Netflix has yet to renew "Territory" for a second season. But the show has received glowing reviews from The Hollywood Reporter, which called it a "constantly watchable drama," and The Guardian, which described it as "'Succession' in the outback."
With comparisons to successful shows like "Yellowstone" and "Succession," and a solid debut on Netflix, "Territory" could have longevity on the streamer.
Netflix has already cornered the market on rom-coms and true-crime, but the Western genre has remained largely untapped. Perhaps that's why "Yellowstone," which follows a family that owns the largest ranch in Montana, has become such a massive success for Paramount.
The show, cocreated by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, spawned the prequel series "1883" and "1923," the latter of which stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.
Although "Yellowstone" will conclude soon with its upcoming fifth season, the Sheridan TV universe will continue expanding with a sequel series called "The Madison," starring Michelle Pfeiffer.
With a sprawling cast and a wealth of narrative threads at its disposal, Netflix could similarly use "Territory" as a jumping-off point for a larger universe.
The 6-episode season ends with unanswered questions, making it ripe for another installment
Not everyone makes it out of season one of "Territory" alive. By the end of the season, Susie Lawson (Philippa Northeast), the teenage daughter of Graham (Michael Dorman) and Emily Lawson (Anna Torv), is killed by a bull.
Then Lachie Kirby (Joe Klocek), who was dating Susie, reveals that his mining billionaire mom, Sandra Kirby (Sara Wiseman), has a plan to blow up a portion of the land that's sacred to the Indigenous people. By the time the Lawsons and the Indigenous people arrive, Sandra has already blown up the area.
Susie isn't the only casualty. Rich Petrakis (Sam Delich) is shot dead by Colin Lawson (Robert Taylor) during a confrontation.
The finale ends with Colin giving Graham and Emily the keys to the house, alluding to them becoming the new successors — meaning there's plenty more to explore in a potential season two.
