Brussels (ANSA) – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that “North Korean troops have been sent to Russia and North Korean military units have been deployed in the Kursk region”. For the head of the Atlantic Alliance, this is a “significant escalation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s involvement in Russia’s illegal war, yet another violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, and a dangerous expansion of the Russian war: it must stop immediately”.
The deployment of North Korean troops “is also a sign of Putin’s growing desperation” noted the former Dutch prime minister, adding that “over 600,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the war” and that Putin “is unable to sustain his assault on Ukraine without foreign support. This is because the Ukrainians are responding with courage, resilience, and ingenuity”.
“The deepening of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a threat to the security of both the Indo-Pacific and the Euro-Atlantic,” explained Rutte, emphasizing how this undermines “peace on the Korean peninsula” and fuels “the Russian war against Ukraine”. A South Korean delegation has informed the North Atlantic Council and other Indo-Pacific partners – Australia, Japan, and New Zealand – about North Korea’s growing involvement in the Russian war against Ukraine (October 28).
