In its strategic push to advance artificial intelligence capabilities, Chinese smartphone maker Oppo said that it is indeed holding weekly talks with top management at both Google and Microsoft. This is being done in developing innovative AI applications as Oppo readies its flagship smartphone for global launch.Â
Billy Zhang, president of Oppo’s overseas market, sales, and services said that they will continue to be engaged in a proactive and understanding relationship. “Google is actively engaging with us in China regarding our needs and challenges in terms of their product. They will also work with us in terms of coming up with effective solutions,” he said.Â
Oppo, ranked second in mainland China and fourth globally based on smartphone shipments, says Canalys, is hardly behind in its drive to inject AI into the production line. Zhang admitted that automation within factories has been one such major factor to enhance quality, reduce costs of productions, and bring general efficiency.Â
The company disclosed that it sends 60% of shipments to markets outside China, mainly in Southeast Asia and Europe. Zhang mentioned that Oppo is still expanding further in Europe and added that it has no immediate plan to enter the U.S. market.Â
Oppo’s new flagship series Find X8 is allegedly to be equipped with state-of-the-art AI features: the company is said to install the new writing and recording summary tools powered by Google’s Gemini, as well as text-to-speech functionality from Microsoft, based on OpenAI’s products, such as ChatGPT. This is following an increasingly popular trend of mobile manufacturers to apply AI technology in order to make customer experiences better.Â
Industry insiders say that despite leading in AI technology in terms of innovation, it seems that Chinese companies, for instance, Oppo will lead in consumer applications. This is because of its aggressive plan to make its generative AI go in 50 million devices in one year. The available tools for AI are as depicted in the features applied today such as reflection removal of a photo enhancement and even ChatGPT, conversational bot.Â
Oppo has been developing its own AI models since 2020 and recently opened an AI center in February. Zhang expressed optimism about the transformative power of AI across various sectors, proclaiming that “AI is the most important area for tech in the future.”Â
As Oppo rolls out its digital management system at its various factories spread all over countries like India and Indonesia, the company claims cost savings in manufacturing along with hastened production times thus streamlining the way to a timely response to market demands.
