Hit BBC series lands special spin-off – but furious fans accuse bosses of ‘copying’ hit 90s show
Date: 2024-10-30HAVE I Got News For You has landed a sporting spin-off, but some critical viewers have pointed out that the concept for it is nothing new.
The satirical news quiz show started airing in 1990, and sees panelists grilled on current events with a comedic twist.
It stars Ian Hislop and Paul Merton who are team captains along with a rotating panel of celebrity guests.
Now a new version called Have I Got Sport For You has been greenlit for a one-off special.
Broadcast reported that the spin-off will be filmed next month.
Journalist Heather Fallon stated: “It’s expected to be a comedy review of the sporting year and will feature a mix of sporting and comedic talent as part of the BBC’s Christmas schedule.”
While this is exciting news for some Have I Got News For You fans, others have grumbled that it is a rip off of old 90s show They Think It’s All Over.
The comedic quiz show was named after Kenneth Wolstenholme’s iconic 1996 World Cup final commentary.
It ran for 19 seasons before it was eventually axed from BBC One.
The series featured household names such as Gary Lineker and Jonathan Ross before they became famous.
People who used to tune in to They Think It’s All Over took to social media to grumble about its similarities to the ‘new’ Have I Got Sport For You.
One person queried: “Is this not just They Think It’s All Over?”
Another joked: “They Think It’s All Overlap.”
A third added: “They Think It’s They Think It’s All Over.”
Someone else compared it to axed series A Question of Sport, saying: “A sport show with Questions you say, I could think of another name for that.”
