Marvel’s Wolverine director changes allegiance from PS5 to join Xbox
Date: 2024-10-31
Brian Horton is moving from PS5 exclusive Wolverine to work on on Xbox’s Perfect Dark, as Insomniac Games seems major staff changes.
One of the biggest scandals in game development last year was the massive hack committed against Sony first party developer Insomniac Games, which is currently working on the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine.
The malicious ransom attack got away with concept art, screenshots, gameplay footage, a complete plot breakdown, and more for the upcoming Wolverine game, and tried to sell it off for £1.6 million while blackmailing Sony.
That caused a massive hit to the morale of the Spider-Man 2 developer, and now Wolverine’s creative director has left and joined Xbox’s reboot of Perfect Dark.
Creative director Brian Horton hasn’t been part of the Wolverine project since the summer, although it’s unclear when exactly he left Insomniac.
It’s also uncertain why exactly the change happened, but a source close to the matter told newsletter Game File that it’s ‘the result of creative decisions around the game’.
As a result, Marcus Smith will take Horton’s place as creative director on Wolverine, while Mike Daly takes Camerson Christain’s spot as game director, with the latter staying at Insomniac in a different role.
That means Wolverine will be led by the team that made Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, repeating the roles they had on that game.
Horton joins Perfect Dark mid-development as creative director, but still little is known about the project, which is rebooting the classic shooter from 2000.
Although there’d previously been a lot of negativity surrounding the reboot, the initial gameplay footage shown during this summer’s Xbox showcase impressed many and seemed to suggest development was going well.
Nothing official has been shown of Wolverine outside a pre-rendered trailer and while it was initially expected to be released in 2025, Sony has not confirmed that – especially in the wake of the hack.
There are rumours, however, that the developer is ‘gearing up to show off some new stuff’ at some point this year – which at this point in the calendar can only mean The Game Awards in early December.
