SpongeBob’s Krabby Patty is finally real – and available in UK at iconic fast food chain
Date: 2024-11-01
If you grew up in the 00s, I’ll bet there’s one food item you’ve always wanted to try — a Krabby Patty.
The fictional burger from SpongeBob Squarepants was something we saw week in, week out on TV as the iconic yellow cartoon worked the grill at The Krusty Krab.
Perhaps it had something to do with the formula being shrouded in mystery, or maybe it was SpongeBob’s enduring love for the burger, but there’s always been something captivating about it, leaving many desperate to eat one.
And now this foodie dream can become a reality, as a fast food chain has teamed up with Paramount to launch a Krabby Patty Kollab, with two new menu items that look straight out of Bikini Bottom.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the popular cartoon, Wendy’s is selling a Krabby Patty burger, which features a quarter pound of beef, two slices of melty American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and a top-secret Krabby Kollab sauce, all served on a toasted bun.
If this weren’t enough, the chain is also launching another SpongeBob-themed item, that’s a twist on their famous Frosty. The icy vanilla product, that’s somewhere between an ice cream and a milkshake, will now come with a Pineapple-flavoured puree swirl.
The items are already available to buy in the US, and they’re coming to Wendy’s UK from November 1. A single Krabby Patty will cost £5.99, while a combo meal will be £8.99. The Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty is priced at £3.49 for a regular.
But you’ll have to be quick if you want to get your hands on any of them, as they’ll only be around for a limited time.
The Krabby Patty meal in the US has garnered mixed reactions from customers so far. Some were so excited to try it, with Reddit user u/oni__002 claiming the announcement had them feeling ‘like a kid waiting for Christmas.’
Others shared jokes about the launch, with @astrobanana_memes2 saying on Instagram: ‘Nah Wendy’s got the formula before Plankton, and he been trying for years.’ And @j_a_r_e_d5 claiming: ‘IF SPONGEBOB AIN’T BEHIND THE GRILL WE RIOT.’
A few who had eaten it claimed it was ‘decent’, while @perfect_bih on X posted: ‘@Wendys I felt compelled to tell you that my Krabby Patty was so perfect it’s as if SpongeBob himself prepared it.’
The pineapple Frosty proved popular, with some comparing it to the Dole Whip that’s beloved at Disney parks.

However, not everyone was thrilled about the burger launch. Die-hard SpongeBob fans were upset that a real Krabby Patty was being made, as they felt this went against what the show’s late creator, Stephen Hillenburg, would have wanted.
In a 2004 interview with the New York Times, the animator confessed he didn’t think a real life fast food tie-in where people could buy Krabby Patties was a good idea.
He said: ‘My take on that is that we shouldn’t do that. In the show, the whole point of fast food – the fact that SpongeBob loves being part of the fast-food chain, and that being a manager is his ultimate dream: it’s ironic. It’s something that most people don’t think is a great thing to try and achieve. And we didn’t want to suddenly become the people serving up food that’s not that good for you – especially kids.
‘We work with Burger King, and they make toys and watches. But to actually take the step of pushing the food, that’s crossing the line. I don’t want to be the Pied Piper of fast food.’
And several Wendy’s customers on Instagram also said they were ‘disappointed’ by the food itself – particularly the lack of sesame seeds on the bun.
@heymotherwolf writing: ‘This was more like the CHUM BUCKET collaboration.’ While @snug4bear commented: ‘Disappointed.. there was so much that could’ve made this fun. Is it really a collab?’
We’ll have to wait and see how the meal goes down with UK customers… Will you be trying it?
