Netflix quietly adds chilling thriller that’s left viewers ‘gripped with twists and turns’

Netflix viewers have been left unsettled after tuning into a British horror thriller series filled with ‘twists and turns’.

First released on Paramount Plus last year, The Burning girls is based on the novel of the same name by C.J. Tudor, adapted by Hans Rosenfeldt and Camilla Ahlgren.

It follows Reverend Jack Brooks (played by Samantha Morton) and her teenage daughter Florence (Ruby Stokes), who arrive in the village of Chapel Croft looking for a new start following a sudden loss.

However, the quaint picturesque village is not quite what it seems and actually has an incredibly dark history.

After digging around, Reverend Jack discovers several people have vanished from the area, never to be seen again.

She is also warned of the Burning Girls who haunt the chapel, the spirits of eight-year-old twin sisters who were burned at the stake in 1556, during Queen Mary’s purge of Protestants.

Before Jack’s arrival, the previous vicar also started claiming to have seen the girls who died centuries earlier before hanging himself in the chapel.

The six-part series had previously been declared the perfect Halloween watch – complete with witchcraft, exorcism kits and plenty of jump scares.

Since it was uploaded on Netflix in recent days, the series has gained many new fans, who have also shared their thoughts on the series.

‘Anyone been watching The Burning Girls on Netflix? I have to say, even though it’s not a genre I normally go for, I really, really enjoyed it. It had me gripped from start to finish. And I did not expect that ending! Samantha Morton fantastic as always!’ Meiner posted on X.

‘Omg guys everybody go and watch the burning girls on Netflix immediately!!!’ Dee shared.

Another labelled it ‘brilliant’.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Vienna also wrote: ‘I actually loved this! The twist at the very end was amazing, you think the twist is revealed in the first 15 mins but then by the end my mind was blown, can’t work out why the audience score isn’t higher this was an amazing watch.’

‘This show had unexpected twists and turns. Some good jump scares also,’ Ruth shared too.

Speaking ahead of the series’ release last year, Samantha said it had been ‘intense to film’.

The actress, who has appeared in Band of Gold, Jane Eyre, Emma, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Whale, added that her character was ‘carrying the weight of a lot of secrets – and that’s really heavy’.

The Burning Girls is streaming on Paramount Plus and Netflix.
