An argument with virtual players in Football Manager 2024 has resulted in a fan giving up his save and forcing his entire team to play in the freezing north of Russia.

Football Manager fans have been put through the grinder in the last couple of months, with features being axed left and right and this year’s release being delayed until next March.

Developer Sports Interactive later confirmed that they won’t release a player update to last year’s game, but with the help of the in-game editor fans have already found a way to update it with the latest transfers.

The editor is a very powerful tool, but sometimes it’s used in cynical – even petty – ways, and that’s what one fan did when he sent his players to the freezing north of Russia, after a locker room dispute.

Reddit user NothingAdvanced9348 wanted to resurrect German second division team Schalke, and regain some former glories, when it was seen as one of the best teams in the country.

After sorting the club’s finances and signing some promising players, Schalke finally made it back to the first division, followed by qualifying for the Champions League, then finding themselves ahead of Bayern München in the league halfway thought the season.

‘Here’s where things went to absolute s***, NothingAdvanced said.

‘My two newgen [newly generated] star players (a centre back and a striker) both decided that they want to leave the club in the winter transfer window, after massive interest from, you guessed it, f****** Bayern Munich.

After declining Bayern’s offers, 15 of his players and his captain wanted a meeting where ‘these absolute weapons demanded that I let my two star players leave to Bayern’.

NothingAdvanced said he refused their ultimatum, which resulted in a big drop in morale, and Schalke went on to lose eight of their next 10 games and finished seventh in the league.

NothingAdvanced had had enough at this point and sold the two players, but then the Schalke captain complained that they shouldn’t have done that.

‘I f****** exploded. My girlfriend rushed into the bedroom thinking I was attacked by a f****** bear because I roared so loud,’ NothingAdvanced said.

NothingAdvanced then decided to load up the editor and send all their players to a lower division club in the north of Russia.

But it gets worse, they also ‘lowered every single of my idiot players” attributes to one, with injury proneness to 20. I transferred them all to that club, and locked them on 15 year contracts making 15 quid a week.’

While Football Manager 2024 is a very good game, the dialogue has never been its strong suite and most Football Manager fan can relate to how backwards it can be at times.

This is an extreme example, which is what makes it a great story, but £15 a week for 15 years feels a bit excessive…
